According to scientific studies, watching television can bring a certain state on our human brain, by inducing in some low alpha waves onto it. What are these alpha waves? They are brainwaves between 8 to 12 HZ, which are generally associated with the relaxed and meditative states as well as suggestibility brain states.

According to researchers, TV watching is quite similar to staring at a blank wall for many hours on end. In fact, Herbert Krugman led an experiment in the year of 1969 in which one person was monitored through many tests and it was discovered that in less than one minute’s time of TV watching, that person’s brain moved from the Beta wave-state (Beta waves are associated with logical and active thinking) to the passive Alpha waves. Also, the person’s brain returned to Beta waves’ state when he stopped watching TV and started reading a magazine.

This can indicate for instance one thing, and that is the fact that most brain parts which are responsible for logical thinking, can fade out during TV watching time. Although of course one cannot conclude after experimenting solely on one person’s brain, to assume the effects of TV on people in general, there have been many researches made after Krugman’s, which have repeatedly attested that indeed the act of TV watching has the result of producing low Alpha range brainwaves.

Of course, advertising companies have known of this for a long time now, and they also are good at taking advantage of this people’s brain state of the regular TV viewer, in order to make him/her sort of willingly be exposed to any of their products and induce in people the desire to buy their advertised on TV products. The thing about TV commercials is that in fact there is no need to use any subliminal messages whatsoever. So the advertisers’ task is simply to show a product on the TV screen, relate it to something positive and desirably, and let the viewers have their cake and eat it, so to speak, without the viewers’ realizing it wasn’t exactly to their own good.

Indeed, most people would only have to gain if they reduced their television viewing time. In addition to that, according to some more researches people suffering from ADD (attention-deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) have their brains mostly polluted with excessive Delta, Theta and Alpha waves, and therefore would be most likely to reduce this by either reducing TV watching time, or renouncing it altogether. The real thing is (and which of course, is not said on TV) watching TV can be harmful to anyone’s attention capacity and are especially noxious for those who already overpass their number of Alpha waves.

There are many healthy alternatives to watching TV. The most obvious one is reading books and magazines, so something that is not televised. Not only reading, but also writing can stimulate the production of higher brainwaves. Other pleasant and relaxing activities would be singing or playing an instrument, simply sitting quietly for some time, painting, going for a walk in the park, spending time with your family, training your pet, and so on. Your attention is simply stuck to the screen and some very unusual, but also subtle phenomenon can happen in your brain. Everything on TV is simply poured onto your brain, without logical or defensive filtering of the information. It’s somehow similar to being hypnotized.

For instance, if try to take a close look at the face of someone who is very attentively watching TV, you may notice the blank expression in his/her eyes, like that of a zombie. And although watching TV may feel relaxing (because it does have the ability to shut out all the rest of the outside reality), giving people the illusion that all their problems vanish when cozily sitting and watching TV, the true and sad fact is that the human brain goes to the Alpha wave state, so that viewers get more passive and less alert, less capable of defending themselves from any harmful message. It is perhaps a less known fact again, that the hypnotizing effect of TV and screen projections has been used by military powers to make soldiers more ready to kill, by showing them very violent and disturbing images, and then sending them to battle. This resulted in the soldiers’ becoming less sensitive, less remorseful when it came to killing others, like in a sort of hypnosis. So maybe it’s time for us to send SOB (save our brains) messages and stop killing our brains with TV.

Mass Media includes the written press, the audio-visual means and multimedia systems. Newspapers, radio and television claim to offer people information concerning the political, economical and cultural life of society, concerning education, health, international relationships, public persons, and so on. Moreover, mass-media circulates opinions and viewpoints regarding public interest events. At the same time, it informs citizens regarding the way in which public institutions work. Because of this reason the press was proclaimed the fourth state power.

The written press is the oldest type of mass media communication. It comprises: magazines, also called gazettes and journals, or daily magazines. They are issued every day. Their role is to keep the public informed about the newest events. Depending on the way of diffusion, we can classify them as central, regional or local gazettes. Depending on the type of information given, the majorities have a general profile; others are specialized in sports and economic news, and so on. There are also many magazines and publications with a weekly appearance or which are issued every month, every semester, and so on. Because of that they are also called periodicals. Most of them are specialized or they are addressed to a target audience such as youth, women, IT experts, sports lovers, rock music fans, and many more.

Among the audio-visual means we can mention the radio, which renders sound messages, and the television, which communicates through sound and images. Depending on the area of reception, we can speak of national and local televisions. Depending on its owner, there are public and private televisions. Private televisions have mostly a commercial character; there are many commercial sports intercalated among the TV programs. TV programs are broadcasted in ether through satellite or relays. Multimedia systems are communication and information means using computer science.

Television is the mass communication medium with the greatest impact on our society. Technically speaking, it is defined as a procedure of decomposing, distance broadcast and than recomposing images. Television was invented between the two World Wars and developed as part of the great mass media only at the end of 1940, first in the United States and then in Europe.

A child of radio and cinematography, television has long preserved a language which, being original, allows it to take an essential part in the media system. When it appeared, at the beginning of 1930, it suddenly caused the surprise of the first observers, who were fascinated with a sort of “tele-presence” allowed by this uncanny media form. Analysts state that television is a documentary means which increases considerably radio’s power of information, adding hearing to vision. Television work is based on selenium’s capacity to transform luminous energy in electrical energy and vice verse, because of the electrons’ radiations.

The analysis of the image can be done with the help of an electronic camera, which converts the optic image in a correspondence image. For that, a fascicle of electrons scans behind a screen which is made of a multitude of luminous points, disposed on 525 lines which make up 25 images (photogram) per second. The analyzed image is transformed in an electric signal which will be broadcasted through radio diffusion. Upon its reception, the image is reconstructed through the same procedure. The screen of a television is made of a plurality of fluorescent points, excited by modulating the electronic signals, and the luminosity being rendered by the cathodic tube’s voltage. The camera seems to imitate quite in details the human eye and is the main tool in the television industry. A camera essentially serves for catching luminous signals, electromagnetic radiations and to transform them into electric signal.

If the images that are found in the field interest of the camera can suffer changes in time, space and color, the resulting electric signal varies only in time. Electromagnetic waves by which the television signal is broadcasted have ultra short wavelengths (from 10 meters to 0.1 millimeters), or extremely high frequencies respectively (from 300 Megahertz to 3000 Gigahertz). Like in the case of the radio, there are two main compartments: the studio and the technical direction. The studio is an inner space inside the television building in which the broadcast is being performed. There, the presenter realizes the program, being filmed by the cameramen. Each image taken by the video cameras inside the studio is visible on a monitor in the technical direction department. All the technical aspects including the software necessary to make a movie or clip, any kind of required arrangement in order to obtain the desired result takes place in this technical studio where the video takes its final shape.

In broad lines, this is the mechanism that enables us to see everything that goes on around the world, amazing advancement, isn’t it?

Everyone has issues and different people listen to different music for different reasons. If someone is lovesick they might listen to ‘Taylor Swift’ and when they break up with the love of their current life ‘Fifteen’ will be blaring in your room while you cry. You might be as sneaky as me and when your teacher is a bit boring as we all think sometimes you might also sit at the back of the class with your iPod earphones in your ears until you’re asked a question to which you answer, “What was the question Miss?”

Music is just another way to express yourself. Music says a lot about a person and I don’t think you know someone completely until you know what their taste in music is and if you guess correctly it just goes to show how well you know the person, for example: A friend came to visit me and I put on some music and she commented saying, “I thought you were the type to listen to jazz or classical music.” As a quiet person (at times) I could see why she came to this conclusion about me, but think about it, as music is a gateway to knowing a person wouldn’t a quiet person like myself listen to something louder to express myself? This is true.

You know how pregnant woman go on about how they will let their unborn child listen to Mozart, while they do so the baby will end up intelligent well the power of music to affect memory is quite intriguing. Mozart’s music and Baroque music, with a 60 beats per minute beat pattern, activate the left and right brain. The simultaneous left and right brain action maximizes learning and retention of information. The information being studied activates the left brain while the music activates the right brain. Also, activities which engage both sides of the brain at the same time, such as playing an instrument or singing, causes the brain to be more capable of processing information. Wow that was a mouthful of information but in a nutshell it just means that music, mainly classical helps to improve your unborn child’s memory as well as brain activity.

If you’re soulful you might listen to jazz or classical music. Lionel Richie if you’re a romantic like my mother, rock if you’re a teen with issues like me (ha-ha), and Young MC if you like a bit of a dance. Personally having the same tastes in music brought my friends and I together, today we may not be as close but exchanging music is a perfect excuse to get together!

Not all of us learn the same way, when I study for an exam with a lot of content I will summarize my notes or even sing. When I had to learn all the bones in the human body I was singing past 12 at night and you know what, I passed that section well! Like I said in a previous article judging someone is wrong, and seeing as music is a part of who we are judging someone based on what music they enjoy is equally wrong.

So whatever your music preference is, golden oldies, punk, rock, classic or R&B, plug your earphones in, let your world disappear and don’t let anyone tell you any better. When it comes to me well I feel like listening to a bit of U2 myself. What type of music do you listen to the most?

Rock.

Alternative.

Classic.

Rap.

R&B.

Pop.

Dance

Electro.

Golden oldies.
